The Very Pink Notebook Review
Good Girl Bad Girl is a disturbingly dark, psychological thriller, with a complex, multi-layered plot. Our protagonist, Kal, returns from her latest photo-journalism assignment to find her investigative journalist mother is missing. Kal has spent her life being trained, by her late father, in understanding human psychology and her instincts immediately warn her something is very wrong.
Although a little slow to start with once the pace picks up it rarely lets up and the complicated job of unravelling her mothers clues leads Kal, and her loyal friends, into a black underworld of child trafficking. When I sensed where this plot was going I felt a reluctance to continue chapter after chapter, but Girdharry has crafted an acceptable balance of giving just enough information, so you know what is going on but you do not have to endure any graphic detail. And knowing what is going on makes you really route for Kal in her quest to rescue the ones most at danger; the children.
What I really liked about this book was the way the author inserted the fascinating details about human psychology, without it ever being out of place in the plot. Kal, at first glance may seem like a very unrealistic character but as the reader discovers she is not the child of 'average' parents and had a far from normal childhood so she is not going to be your every day citizen.
It was great to have such a determined female lead protagonist and we discover she comes from a family of these women, but also for her main ally, best friend Marty, to also be a strong - both mentally and physically - female.
Overall this is a well written, pacey, meaty plot. Teamed with well developed characters it is certainly worth a read, particularly if you like your novels with a more 'noir' flavour.
